New Look For Avatar

As many of you know I’ve been looking for a new look for my avatar. It’s not that the picture I used was bad (actually it’s quite good considering it’s from my model shoot for Harley Davidson), I just felt that it was time for a change.

So then came the question of exactly what type of avatar do I want to create? I went a’ surfin and came across many places to create avatars of various sizes/shapes, but in the end I liked using the obamame best.

However I figured I’s show off some of what I created. Enjoy!

Hack Detection At 30,000 Feet!

I have an iTouch I got this Chistmas. It’s mainly for me to be able to watch movies while traveling. As I prefer widescreen format movies, my iPod classic’s screen simply leaves much to be desired.

Some of the iTouch’s cool features is that it has WiFi capability so it can connect to wireless networks to surf the web, send/recieve e-mail, use twitter, & even update this website.

As I used the iTouch more I’ve become aware of apps that assist in network detection, etc. and so I now use my iTouch as a WiFi scanner and tester. I have it set to autodetect open wireless connections…mostly to save time and also see who is wide open in a given area (possible security exploite, etc. with my clients).

So imagin my suprise when I discover that I am connected to something called FreePublicWiFi while I am in route from Seattle to Anchorage!

Here I am at over 30,000 feet and I am connected to an open public wireless connection?!?!?

I remember reading an article about how hackers use that as a dupe to establish connectivity between two systems allowing the attacker to communicate with the “Free Public WiFi” host as if they were a legitimate user on the same LAN (giving them access to your shares, internet if you are connected or WORSE depending on the attackers toolset).

So I look around and lo and behold there is a young lady with her dell a row away.

I go and introduce myself and hand her my business card (figured that way I wouldn’t look like some type of airborne letch).

Within minutes I’m able to remove her open ad-hoc network on her XP laptop. I also wrote down some free A/V and anti-spyware tools she could use to make her PC more secure.

She wanted to thank me and I told her to thank me by spreading the word about not connecting to any free public wifi connections, or if you do and you’re not connected to the internet…remove them from your Windows Preferred Networks roster.

Finally…Something I REALLY Wanted From A Convention!

I don’t know how many of you out there have attended a conference, but if you have you know how the vendors have giveaways…squeze balls, lighted pens, water bottles, coffee mugs, etc.

Well this week I am attending the AFCEA West Conference in San Diego. It’s the largest military/industrial event on the west coast.

So all the big players are there and there are teddy bears, bags, etc. however I finally saw something that I really wanted. A digital camoflage tote bag!

I know you’re saying “A digital camoflage TOTE BAG? Really? Seriously…really?!?”

Yes…really.

As many of you know I have a digital camoflage notebook so as I discovered the tote I figured I had to have a matching bag to go with the tote!

So now I’m coordinated…in a macho way.

The Automatic WordPress Upgrade A Success!

Normally I’m not one to use the wordpress automatic update feature on my websites. It’s mainly for two reasons:

  1. I have complete control over the uploading and updating
  2. If there is an issue I can quickly correct it

Typically I like control over the various aspects and if I have any special modifications, an automatic upgrade would most likely overwrite it.

However as wordpress has matured as a tool, I’ve been making very little modifications outside of the environment…as there are plugins that work everything I need done to wordpress and the site.

So I figured what the hell and did the automatic upgrade.

Now don’t get me wrong, I had downloaded the code and had backed up the database just in case…I’ve been through enough “upgrades” to know I needed a fallback/rollback contingency in place and ready.

So…I did it and was very impressed! The upgrade was quick, the database migration was smooth and the site tests turned out great!

So I’m done and it took more time for me to download the code and backup the database that the upgrade!

Now it’s time to work on my other sites.

I Thought It Never Rains In California!

So today is the FIRST SUNNY DAY since I arrived in California! You hear the song “it never rains in California…” but with the 50+ winds and the rain you gotta go What the HELL?!?!? I had to say that I’m glad that my hotel is right next to the convention center with an dry underground entrance to boot.

I missed taking pictures or videos the first day, however I was able to get pictures yesterday evening as well as a small video which I uploaded:

Something to note: You can hear the winds from outside my window (and you can’t open any windows) which drown out President Obama’s press conference that I was listening to as I recorded the video!

Once I get the pictures cleaned up, I’ll add them to the gallery.

The Comcast Porn “Fluke” – NOT SAFE FOR WORK!

I case you hadn’t heard, certain Comcast customers in Tucson, AZ go to watch more that the superbowl last night.

Can it really be called a “fluke” when the loosing team does an upset and all of a sudden there’s a switch to a video of a huge, flapping penis in the team’s home town?

As the story goes…just after Larry Fitzgerald’s heroic comeback touchdown for the Arizona Cardinals, the video feed abruptly switched to a scene from Comcast’s “Club Jenna Channel” treating viewers to the sight of some porn star swinging his schlong around insanely for a few seconds.

Comcast has stated that engineers are working tirelessly to figure out what happened, but haven’t yet come up with an explanation.

My money is that because it was in Arizona just after the upset, it’s more than a glitch or even human error. That just had to be deliberate (ala Fight Club).

So without further ado…here is the video. WARNING THIS VIDEO CONTAINS NUDITY AND STUPID PORN DIALOG!

Photo Gallery Is Back Online!

A while back I upgraded the gallery and it went BONKERS!

The code was producing four copies of each album on the gallery page and depending upon WHICH gallery it was, the working gallery (as in the link that showed the pictures) was the second, third or fourth album…never the first.

Regardless, the latest version fixed the problem and now the photos are back!

Now I just need to add some new photos!
