He made you cringe…
He made you think…
But most importantly…he made you laugh.
I remember my first Carlin album to this day: Class Clown. I listened to it on my BASF battery operated portable turntable. At the time (I was only 13) it was so cool to be exposed to the “Seven Dirty Words” as well as his other skits.
I was shocked, I was stunned….
I just couldn’t stop laughing.
The only other comedy album I owned at this point was Bill Cosby’s 200 M.P.H. album which has no profanity, so listening to someone saying the “Seven Dirty Words” as a young teen was exciting to say the least.
Since then I have enjoyed George’s wit and as I grew older I never tired of it.
The wonderful thing about his humor was his incredible mastery of the English language. To quote him “By and large, language is a tool for concealing the truth.”
I did get to see an HBO special where they honored him for 40 years of outstanding comedy. During the interview w/John Stewart, I got to see the more personable side of George and it was so cool to see him with his hair down. It was an intimate moment that increased my respect and admiration for the great entertainer.
George…I know I will be among the many who will miss you.
Rest well. You deserve it.
