Mahala Ashley Dickerson: 1912-2007
While I’m not a proponent of “Black History Month” (mainly because I have the odd belief that all diversity in America should be celebrated year round – since we are, by default, a country of diversity…I know SILLY ME) I do want to take the time to celebrate a person who I had the privileage to know as well as be part of her circle of friends.
Mahala Ashley Dickerson was an amazing woman. While she was a woman of firsts (First African-American Female Lawyer in Alabama, First African-American Lawyer – of either sex – in Alaska and First African-American President of the National Associaton of Women Lawyers, to name the prominent ones) she was first in her own right.
When I first met “Miss D.” (as we affectionately called her), I was immediately taked aback by her. She was regal, well spoken, and armed with a sharp mind. I enjoyed her stories as well as discussions and philosophies of life that only a person with a long and fruitful life could muster. She was a person of kind spirit.
I always felt cherished to be invited to her events, even if it was only because I was “Lynn’s boyfriend.” I was proud and honored to wear a tuxedo to her 90th birthday celebration, and equally honored to be part of her 4th of July parties at the homestead and her Christmas gatherings at the law firm.
I will never forget you Miss D…and like I told you and many others, when I grow up I want to be JUST LIKE YOU!
Rest in Peace

Ever heard of lock bumping? You seriously NEED to!

I am normally not overly interested in the details of physical security, but I’ve heard about a new (well old but new to me) method of opening locks called lock bumping. A lot of traditional lock picking tools rely on Newton’s Third Law – every action has an equal and opposite reaction. A lock pick gun for example uses this principal to pass impulse energy from one pin to the next in a lock. The technique of lock bumping operates in a similar manner. It requires the use of a 999 key – a key with all the cuts at a maximum (9) depth. The key is inserted into the lock and struck with something, a soft headed hammer for example, the key moves and the pins are bumped allowing the lock to be opened.
So why is the technique worrysome? Because it’s far easier than lock picking, either manually or with tools and is said to work on 90% of existing locks! Normal lockpicking require a lot of skill and practice, but this technique seems to require no skills.
Also, it’s all over the internet – this link from Wikipedia talks about it, and this youtube video below shows the seriousness of it:
While I was showing someone the draft, they told me that the lock bump technique is used in the movie Heat - going to have to dig out my DVD and watch it again….
Lastly, if anyone is actually interested eBay sells bump keys (search for depth keys) and if you actually want to see what a bump key looks like then the people at Bumpkey.US sell them here.

Bill Oefelein back in the news!
Though I doubt he is happy with this report: NASA Astronaut arrested. Commander Bill Oefelein is Alaska’s first astronaut as well as a mission commander/pilot for the December 2006 shuttle mission (see his site: An Alaskan Astronaut. It was a great thing for Alaskans, Alaskan children and the U.S. in general.
So why am I posting anything?
Because I expect this to become another media circus over nothing of value or importance. Like the Rosie O’Donnel vs. Donald Trump debacle, there must not be anything relevant going on in the world to cover (i.e. Iraq or Iran). Hell, the general state of the middle east is soooooo passe’! I mean does anyone hear much about the Balkans anymore? No more problems with nukes in North Korea? George Clooney must have fixed all the problems in Darfur….way to go George – you DA MAN!!!!!
NAH! Nothing is going on…and so we MUST obsessively worry about a love triangle that is so important that it precedes the Senate debates over the President’s plan for the war we are fighting.
Remember the war? It’s why you drive around with that tattered flag on your Antenna or window or that magnetic ribbon you forgot is on the back of your car.
Maybe we need another tragedy anniversary celebration!
You know like we did in August and September of last year – August was the Katrina specials; news shows doing one hour specials of the pain people went through and talk show doing retrospectives where they pretend to feel the pain and suffering of the victims on their shows.
Then there was September…MIGHTY September where we did special after special as soon as the month started. Shows entitled “Inside The Twin Towers” and “Ground Zero” but closer to the actual date it becomes all of that PLUS stuff like “True Hollywood Story: Bin Laden” and Geraldo doing a “Where was Geraldo That Fateful Day?”
I mean…am I the only one that is sick and damn tired of the horrible tragedy anniversary specials they splatter all over TV?
Please, don’t get me wrong. Tasteful memorial services need to be done so that we honor those we have dearly lost and reflect upon how far we have come since.
Of course, I am absolutely sure that there are tons of people that love all this shit; I mean I guess there is some morbid fascination with having your senses drenched in a tragedy and sensationalism, but I just don’t see what it gets you.
It’s just damn annoying.
To Commander Oefelein, I hope it passes quickly…maybe there will be a “wardrobe malfunction” or a “racial slight” at the Grammys that the media can latch on to (I know the fact an accomplished actor assaulted his son with a gun didn’t overshadow you)!

Proof that once again…Porn is King!

bloomberg: Porn Viewed By Almost Half of Kids, Often Mistakenly
The above article just continues to prove the fact that when it comes to internet advancement Porno is King!
Whether you agree with the morals or not, Pornography has pushed internet development to where it is now. Online images, streaming media, videos and electronic commerce all come directly from the Porn industry’s early adaption of new technology that allow “customers” the assumed privacy of accessing the content in their homes with no “brown paper wrapped” packages (with things like a “back massager” in the mail).
So it should be no surprise that they lead the charge in SEO (Search Engine Optimization) as well. Before the Government closed them down, if you surfed to http://whitehouse.com instead of http://whitehouse.gov, you’d end up with a different view of White House Antics.
The moral of this story? If parents are surprised by this then they are not DO THEIR JOB! Parents are entrusted with the responsibility of managing what their children do (shocking, but true). It does not need to be a fanatical facist kind of thing, but just be aware of what your children do and talk to them. I have learned that my children feel they can tell me things that I find most parents a) don’t want to hear or b) don’t want to know about their children which in my opinion, is simply lubricious.
Because of those talks, I don’t worry about my children’s whereabouts or doings…much. It’s not to say I’m always happy with their choices, but at the same time I also feel that they trust me enough as a parent to tell me things and listen to my guidance – sometimes to the point of following it even.
After all, Jeffery Dahmer’s parents admitted they knew he was “doing something odd in the basement” but thought nothing of it and look how their son ended up.
