The Canoe Race: A Modern Parable

A Japanese company and an American company decided to have a canoe race on the Missouri River. Both teams practiced long and hard to reach their peak performance before the race.

On the big day, the Japanese won by a mile.

The Americans, very discouraged and depressed, decided to investigate the reason for the crushing defeat. A management team made up of senior management was formed to investigate and recommend appropriate action.

Their conclusion was the Japanese had 8 people rowing and 1 person steering, while the American team had 8 people steering and 1 person rowing. So American management hired a consulting company and paid them a large amount of money for a second opinion.

They advised that too many people were steering the boat, while not enough people were rowing. To prevent another loss to the Japanese, the rowing team’s management structure was totally reorganized to 4 steering supervisors, 3 area steering superintendents and 1 assistant superintendent steering manager.

They also implemented a new performance system that would give the 1 person rowing the boat greater incentive to work harder. It was called the “Rowing Team Quality First Program”, with meetings, dinners and free pens for the rower. There was discussion of getting new paddles, canoes and other equipment, extra vacation days for practices and bonuses.

The next year the Japanese won by two miles.

Humiliated, the American management laid off the rower for poor performance, halted development of a new canoe, sold the paddles, and canceled all capital investments for new equipment. The money saved was distributed to the Senior Executives as bonuses and the next year’s racing team was out sourced to India!!!!

After she woke up, a woman told her husband, "I just dreamed that you gave me
a pearl necklace for Valentine’s day. What do you think it means?"

With a sly smile he says "You’ll know tonight."

That evening, the man came home with a small package and gave it to his wife.
Delighted, she opened it – to find a book entitled "The meaning of dreams"

Finally! Someone in the “media” gets it.

http://www.taemag.com/issues/articleID.18977/article_detail.asp

The anti-war zealots plaster a LOT of data at us that supposedly show us how horrible war is.  It’s like the “truth” commercials…leaving it in the hands of the zealots makes for ugly perceptions.

It’s why fanatics are so brutal…even the “American” ones.

So it’s very refreshing when not only someone “gets it,” they have the talent to actually put it in perspective to anyone willing to read it.  War is hell, but from a soldier’s perspective – it’s getting better.

For you “Anti-Bush-ites” don’t fret.  He isn’t making any case for him or the administration.  It’s objective

unlike the liberal zealots out there

Lest we forget…

"I would rather be exposed to the inconveniences attending too much liberty
than to those attending too small a degree of it." – Thomas Jefferson

Liberty is a beautiful and terrifying thing.  Most people take it
for granted.  An example is the right to question our government and it’s
leaders or better yet (thanks to comedians) to make fun of either.

Regardless of whether you’re for or against the war, you have the right to
choose because of the sacrifice of fellow men and women who have been willing to
sacrifice all.

Lately, we have been very willing to thank them – applause when they board
aircraft, shaking their hands or just acknowledging the very fact they are
willing to be (or have already been) in harm’s way for us.

However there is another side that does not get into the limelight…I can’t
really remember when it has.

The survivors of the men and women who have given their lives and the other men
and women who take the brave home to rest or deliver the one bit of news that is
both hard and bad for the recipient and the messenger:

Be warned….this one will most likely be emotional

Thank you to all of the brave men and women who serve and their loved ones
who stand waiting for their return.
