Volcano Preparedness

Because of the recent eruptions of the Augustine Volcano in Cook Inlet, I thought it would be a good idea to remind my friends that they should turn off their personal computers, scanners and all copy machines when they are not in use or you are out of your home or office.

You should also increase your stock of air filters. Car air and oil filters go quickly once the ash has started to fall, so pick some up on your way home. You may also want to consider filters for your home and having NIOSH approved dust respirators (coded TC-21C-XXX) for all members of your family. They’re available at places like Air Liquide (562-2080 ask for Steve Hedman). Make sure they are the appropriate size for small children. Breathing ash can is dangerous for humans and pets.

If you are in an area with ash fall, it is recommended that you not exercise or conduct activities that cause you to breath heavily while outdoors. This is especially true for the very young, the elderly, and people with respiratory ailments.
