By decriminalize prostitution!
For those not in the know, there is now a group calling themselves the
Sex Workers Outreach Project
(SWOP)….don’t worry, you can go to the site at work.
They are based in Berkley (shock, gasp), and have even gone so far as to
submit a ballot proposal aimed at easing prostitution laws in the city for
November. They working to get the required 2,100 signatures necessary – no
pun intended.
Now I don’t want to get on a rant here (Hey! I take what I need from Dennis
Miller and I move on…deal with it!), but in essence we ALL pay for it. Men and
Women. The dinners, gifts, helping your girlfriend’s Mom by dumping the garbage
each week or cooking a monthly meal for your man’s parents. If you’re married,
you pay MANY times over. It’s what makes divorce is so expensive.
Relationships come with a price, even the one night stand where you meet the
"woman of your dreams" and in a drunken stupor take her home to only find out
the next morning you really only loved the hair and want what’s her name
gone before coffee and Advil.
Hey, but that’s my opinion…I could be wrong (Goddamnit! What’d I say about
Dennis Miller a minute ago!).
Now let me tell ya. Karl IS NOT against prostitution! I
saw it in action when I was stationed in Germany (and like Bill Clinton, I only
went there…I did not indulge) where it works. When it is accepted by
society and properly regulated it becomes a normal part of the economy.
However…to say that sex-trafficking can possibly be thwarted by
decriminalize prostitution is too much of a stretch. Right off the website "Decriminalized
prostitution would remove the black market profit incentive for traffickers and
would reduce the smuggling of women."
So in their eyes, sex-traffickers are like the old moon shiners/rum runners
of the prohibition days and with the help of a modern day Elliot Ness we can
thwart sex-trafficking with modern day untouchables?!?!?
It’s kind of like a friend’s Daughter I saw in the Harley Dealership a couple
of weeks ago. She was trying to convince Dad to get a new bigger bike that she
likes. Her logic on the bike purchase she liked (used and purple) was that she
could reach the controls, and by reaching the controls she could ride him to
safety if something went wrong.
I guess there is some fuzzy logic there.
Just remember the SWOP goals: safety, dignity, diversity and the changing
needs of sex industry workers, to foster an environment which enables and
affirms individual choices and occupational rights.
So "until we decriminalize prostitution we will not achieve that goal".
