Some Facts Regarding European History

The French and Germans certainly can’t lay claim to being anything like nations with a continuous political tradition half as long as ours. Ours was tested 216 years ago and withstood the test.

Couldn’t agree more …

  • The early settlers arrived in Massachusetts and Virginia when the first Queen Elizabeth was on the throne and England was not yet Britain.
  • Harvard was founded in 1636.
  • The Declaration of Independence was signed a century before the unification of Germany and Italy.
  • The American political system is one of the oldest in the world, far older than those upstart regimes in France and Germany.
  • America has the oldest written constitution (drafted in 1787).
  • The United States is the world’s oldest surviving democracy.
  • America has done little but tinker with it’s constitution since 1791. France has had five republics since 1789 along with several monarchies, one directory, a consulate and a couple of empires and a collaborationist-fascist -dictatorship.

Americans who go on about the ‘old world’ should look in the mirror first…and Europeans who dismiss America as a testosterone driven adolescent bereft of history and tradition should think about the above.

Hints for Identity Theft!

Some things to consider:

Place the contents of your wallet on a photocopy machine, do both sides of each license,
credit card, etc., you will know what you had in your wallet and all of the account numbers and phone numbers to call and cancel. Keep the photocopy in a safe place.

I pass it along, for your information. We’ve all heard horror stories about fraud that’s committed against us using our name, address, SS#, credit, etc.

But here’s some critical information to limit the damage in case this happens to you or someone you know. As everyone always advises, cancel your credit cards immediately, but the key is having the toll free numbers and your card numbers handy so you know whom to call. Keep those where you can find them easily. File a police report immediately in the jurisdiction where it was stolen, this proves to credit
providers you were diligent, and is a first step toward an investigation (if there ever is one).

But here’s what is perhaps most important: – Call the three national credit reporting organizations immediately to place a fraud alert on your name and SS#. I had never heard of doing that until advised by a bank that called to tell me an application for credit was made over the Internet in my name. The alert means any company that checks your credit knows your information was stolen and they have to contact you by phone to authorize new credit.

The numbers are:

You know, we pass along jokes; we pass along just about everything. I think we should pass this information along too. I know this could really help people.

Riding since February!

It’s been the weirdest weather here in Anchorage, but I guess I shouldn’t complain….weather above freezing, not much snow (hell it’s rained more than snow), dry roads.  It’s been such a mild winter that I’ve been able to ride my bike since February 26th here in ALASKA!

Yes…that’s ride with two wheels before my birthday!!!!!!

It’s definitely been cool to ride around and enjoy myself.  I didn’t really realize how much I missed riding and the feeling of freedom and
ease it brings.  The ability to…I dunno <shrug>…fly at ground level.  I guess I now know how a pilot feels when he’s in the
cockpit.

There is an essay by a motorcyclist that rode from Massachusetts to California and he said it better than I ever could. I even put it up as a page on my bike site.
