The French and Germans certainly can’t lay claim to being anything like nations with a continuous political tradition half as long as ours. Ours was tested 216 years ago and withstood the test.
Couldn’t agree more …
- The early settlers arrived in Massachusetts and Virginia when the first Queen Elizabeth was on the throne and England was not yet Britain.
- Harvard was founded in 1636.
- The Declaration of Independence was signed a century before the unification of Germany and Italy.
- The American political system is one of the oldest in the world, far older than those upstart regimes in France and Germany.
- America has the oldest written constitution (drafted in 1787).
- The United States is the world’s oldest surviving democracy.
- America has done little but tinker with it’s constitution since 1791. France has had five republics since 1789 along with several monarchies, one directory, a consulate and a couple of empires and a collaborationist-fascist -dictatorship.
Americans who go on about the ‘old world’ should look in the mirror first…and Europeans who dismiss America as a testosterone driven adolescent bereft of history and tradition should think about the above.
